Gram is a legume crop grown in cool and dry climate. It grows well in temperatures ranging from 10 degrees to 30 degrees. Gram likes well-drained, loamy or sandy loam soil. The pH of the soil should be between 6.0 to 7.5. In North India, the sowing time of gram is from October to November. Whereas in South India, sowing is done from September to October.

Farmers can choose the variety of gram according to the climate and soil of their area. Gram is sown in rows. Keep the distance between the rows 30-45 cm and the distance between the plants 10-15 cm. Sow the seeds 4-5 cm deep.

Farmers should add 10-15 tonnes of cow dung manure per hectare before sowing in the field. Gram needs irrigation during germination, flowering and fruit formation. Many types of diseases and pests can attack the gram crop. Therefore, farmers should make necessary arrangements to prevent it. They should spray appropriate medicines on time. The gram crop is ready for harvesting when 80-90% of the pods turn yellow and the leaves start falling. This crop can be harvested by hand or machine.

When to irrigate

If reports are to be believed, irrigation of crops is very important to protect them from pests. Farmers should irrigate the crops for the second time 50 to 55 days after the first irrigation and the third time within 100 days.

How to increase yield

To increase the yield of gram, sow the recommended varieties in disease free field. Treat the seeds with rhizobium culture before sowing. Sow the manure by pouring method and seeds by row method. Manage pod borer.
